Jeannine Kunz Executive Director & CEO Throughout her 25 years in manufacturing, Jeannine has worked at the intersection of technology, talent, and industry growth, advocating for the transformation of manufacturing through advancements in technologies and workforce innovation. Kunz previously served as SME’s Chief Workforce Development Officer, where she led national initiatives aimed at advancing the US manufacturing workforce. Her team focused on strategizing nationally while partnering locally to build a holistic approach to attracting, developing and retaining talent. This approach optimizes and scales effective local initiatives and programs to train current and future talent across the US in partnership with employers, educators, other non-profits and government. Kunz’s role as co-chair of the Smart Manufacturing Executive Council, a group of business and technology executives led by CESMII and SME focuses on strengthening the US’ competitiveness through smart manufacturing, has helped shape industry standards and fosters collaboration among leaders to integrate cutting-edge solutions like IoT, AI, and automation into manufacturing processes. In 2023, she was appointed to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) Committee on Smart Manufacturing, where she contributed her expertise to develop a national strategy for advancing smart manufacturing. A passionate advocate for the advancement of manufacturing, Kunz serves on several boards and committees that focus on both technology and workforce development. These include board positions for the Manufacturing Technology Deployment Group and the Coalition for Career Development, chair for the manufacturing division of the National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA) workforce committee, and a member of the education and workforce committee for Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing (ARM) Institute. In 2023, Kunz was awarded the ARM Institute Champion Award in recognition of going above and beyond to advocate for her mission of strengthening manufacturing in the US. In addition to her leadership role in workforce development and technology integration, Kunz frequently speaks at industry events and appears in prominent media outlets such as CNBC, Forbes, IndustryWeek, and NPR Marketplace. Her insights and expertise extend to policy, having testified before Congress on issues related to the manufacturing workforce and the supply chain for the Department of Defense. Recognized for her contributions, Kunz was named one of “Crain’s Detroit Business” Notable Women in Manufacturing (2018) and Notable Women in Education (2019). Kunz has been an SME member since 2008 and continues to drive the organization’s mission to accelerate widespread adoption of manufacturing technologies and build North America’s talent and capabilities. Chad Schron Senior Director As Senior Director, I focus on defining our long-term vision and strategic goals, driving team development, and spearheading new product and market initiatives. My role encompasses innovation and growth strategies, as well as talent development and acquisition. I lead various teams including sales, customer success, content delivery, engineering, professional services and content development. With over 25 years of experience in workforce development, I was inspired to enter the manufacturing sector early on, thanks to my father and grandfather, both of whom work in the industry. I am passionate about the critical role manufacturing plays in our economy and national security. One of my most significant contributions to workforce development has been founding Tooling U, the e-learning company acquired by SME in 2010. Our solutions have transformed the lives of hundreds of thousands of individuals by providing new career opportunities, skills development, and certification attainment, while also benefiting thousands of organizations through reduced turnover, scrap, and costs, as well as improved safety and technology adoption. My primary achievement has been delivering scalable solutions that attract, develop, and retain manufacturing talent. I influence the future of manufacturing through workforce development by engaging new populations historically reliant on manufacturing and through innovative content and delivery methods. Gretchen SchultzDirector of Workforce Development As the Director of Workforce Development, I focus on enhancing the capabilities of today’s and tomorrow’s manufacturing workforce by strategically leveraging education, industry insights, economic development, and government initiatives. I lead the workforce development strategy related to industry-specific learning and development products and services, aiming to build capacity within local communities and statewide initiatives. Through collaboration with stakeholders, we’ve developed innovative workforce solutions that help close the skills gap and meet the needs of the manufacturing community. With over 30 years of experience in workforce development, all within the manufacturing sector, I was drawn to this field because of my passion for helping people reach their potential and find fulfilling careers. Toni NearyDirector of Community Engagement and Workforce Innovation As the Director of Community Engagement and Workforce Innovation, I focus on pipeline development through diversity, equity, inclusion, and access , with a heavy focus on the early talent pipeline. My goal is to increase awareness and excitement among students about careers in manufacturing and engineering at all age levels. With nearly 20 years in the field, I stumbled into my career in manufacturing education, but it ultimately ignited my passion for ourindustry. I have the privilege of witnessing innovative programs and projects from across the country and sharing these insights. It’s inspiring to be in a room where someone poses the question, “How do we?” and we can respond with successful examples from other regions. What drives me is the desire to find solutions to the challenges industry has faced for decades. I believe every student deserves access to a relevant and engaging curriculum that prepares them for the real world and helps them unlock their true potential. I am committed to ensuring that both rural and urban schools across the United States have equal access to STEM & technology education. Recently, I architected and launched the Manufacturing Imperative – Workforce Pipeline Challenge, partnering with 25 colleges across 17 states to create and deploy bold, innovative solutions that increase manufacturing talent and drive economic mobility for individuals. Dan Sloan Director of Industry & Workforce Partnerships As the Director of Industry and Workforce Partnerships, I lead strategic collaborations among industry, academia, and various state and federal agencies to enhance our nation’s manufacturing workforce development on a large scale. With 25 years of experience in workforce development, my journey began right out of college when I helped employers create training videos and onboarding programs. This early work ignited my passion for connecting human capital with organizational performance. The health and vitality of our manufacturing sector are vital not only to our nation’s economy and national defense but also to the well-being of countless individuals and communities. This mission inspires me every day. A robust and skilled manufacturing workforce is essential for fostering innovation and progress; without it, we risk falling into outdated practices and technologies. Greg JonesDirector of Strategic Programs & Partnerships As the Director of Strategic Programs & Partnerships, I am passionately committed to addressing the skills gap in manufacturing, with a particular focus on tackling the shortage of career and technical education (CTE) teachers in the U.S. In my role, I manage the Smartforce Student Summit at the International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS), an impactful event that attracts over 14,000 attendees, including educators, administrators, parent chaperones, and students from high school to post-secondary levels, along with elementary and middle school participants. The Summit is designed to inspire young people to pursue STEM education and careers in manufacturing, empowering them to make informed career choices at an early age. With 39 years of experience in manufacturing, including 23 years focused on workforce development, I am deeply passionate about supporting STEM initiatives and encouraging participation in both national and local robotics competitions, particularly among underserved and underrepresented communities. One of the programs I champion is the Miles For Manufacturing 5K event, which raises vital funds for STEM programs and supports FIRST and VEX Robotics teams across Chicago and the U.S. Witnessing the enthusiasm of students at these industry events reinforces my optimism for the future workforce. I believe that by investing in education and providing access to opportunities, we can cultivate a new generation of skilled professionals ready to drive innovation in manufacturing. Rob CoolidgeDirector of Business Development & Inside Sales As the Director of Business Development & Inside Sales, I work with small businesses to highlight the importance of training and development for both new hires and incumbent workers. I understand their unique needs and help design tailored training plans that drive success. With eight years in the workforce development field, I was drawn to this area because manufacturing is the backbone of our economy. Dave Ewers Director of Content Development As the Director of Content Development, I continuously monitor and update our offerings and develop new learning content and courses based on the evolving needs of our users, the manufacturing industry, and educational institutions. I assist companies and schools by providing customized training bundles tailored to their workforce development needs. Additionally, I oversee industry-recognized certifications in core manufacturing areas, including Lean Manufacturing, Manufacturing Engineering, Additive Manufacturing, and Electrification, with programs like EV Fundamentals and Battery Packaging and Assembly. I began my career in training and development 30 years ago as a trainer in the U.S. Navy. After leaving the service, I worked across various industries, including electronics manufacturing, industrial fluid power, nuclear power, oil and gas, and chemical manufacturing. Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to create workforce development programs that equip individuals with the skills and knowledge needed to perform their jobs safely and efficiently while also providing career development pathways. Witnessing individuals grow in their roles and advance in their careers through enhanced skills and knowledge is what energizes me in this field. The greatest impact of my work lies in providing resources that are relevant to the specific needs of both students and current manufacturing professionals. I strive to create a roadmap for success through our class mappings, preparing students and employees for graduation, certification, or career advancement. John HindmanDirector, Learning & Performance Improvement As Director of Learning & Performance Improvement, I lead our Learning Services team, dedicated to supporting manufacturers from within their operations. We design, develop, and implement best-in-class workforce development programs that encompass onboarding, standardized on-the-job training, assessments, and upskilling. Our programs bring structure and sustainability to workforce programs, resulting in enhanced productivity, output, and employee retention. With over 20 years of experience in workforce development, I have always been drawn to manufacturing.
